The former Hamburg Amerika Lines vessel "SS Vaterland" was seized by the Navy Department when war was declared on Germany in WWI 1918, the ship was immediately transformed into a troop carrying transport ship. President Wilson gave her a new name derived from the Bible "Leviathan...monster of the deep". This vessel became the most loved vessel of the doughboys who returned to the states on her after hostilities ended in Europe. They nicknamed her Levi Nathan.
