Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indianna and Illinois were the names given to the first four transatlantic passenger steamers of the Pennsylvania and Ohio Steamship Company. Formed by the Pennsylvania Railroad to carry their goods from the interior states of the USA, delivered by rail to the port of Philladelphia and then carry them across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe. This company would later be known to the world as the American Line. The average size of these vessels were 3,104 tons, 343 feet by 43 feet with a speed of 12 kt. After reconditioning and the addition of a small superstructure (study portrayal)these vessels achieved 14 knots. It is fairly amazing to think of a vessel this size today would be considered nothing more than a private yacht. Print size is 8.5 x 11 on glossy archival 80lb stock.
Being the first vessels for the transatlantic passenger trade built by the William Cramp & Sons Shipyard they were meticulously designed by Barnabus H. Bartol and MR. Cramp himself to be the most stable vessels of the times.
