The first four American built transatlantic iron steamers came from the William Cramp & Son's shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the Delaware River. All four were state of the art in engineering and construction practices for the 1870's. Ordered by the American Steamship Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which could never show a profit during it's existence in the early 1870's was eventually sold to the International Navigation Company (Red Star Line) which would eventually become the American Line, after their purchase of the Innman Line. These ships were not extremely large but were the largest passenger liners built in the U.S.A. at that time. They ranked within the first 15 largest vessels on the Atlantic.
