The American Merchant Lines was an offshoot of the United States Lines which was trying to separate it's cargo business from it's passenger business in 1929. The ships which sailed under their banner were the 502 class transport/cargo ships built for the USSB in 1920. Traditionally these ships are called "Hog Islanders" in reference to the shipyard on Hog Island in the Delaware River from which they were launched. Many would be lost in the first few months of WWII after they had been sold to a Belgian company.
