The first vessel to exceed the Great Eastern in size of tonnage was the RMS Teutonic of the White Star Line. This is the very same vessel that when viewed by Kaiser Willhelm of Germany during a review of Her Majesty's Naval Forces at Spithead exclaimed, "We must have some of these." This statement led to the building of a fleet of passenger vessels for German shipowners which were to strip the Blue Ribband from the speed queens of Great Britain.
